Dampness is a common issue in many homes, and while rising damp is widely recognised, another form of moisture ingress often goes unnoticed: lateral damp, more commonly known as penetrating damp.
Unlike rising damp, which moves upward through capillary action, penetrating damp travels horizontally through walls. Left unchecked, it can damage plaster, paint, masonry and timber, and contribute to mould growth. Catching it early can save homeowners from costly repairs and help keep a property in good condition.

1. Compare internal and external ground levels. Step outside and check the wall directly opposite where dampness appears indoors. If soil, mulch or paving sits higher than the internal floor level, moisture may be bridging into the wall from outside.
2. Look for external defects. Examine the exterior for cracked render, damaged brickwork, loose or missing mortar, blocked gutters or downpipes, and faulty roof flashing. Any of these can let rainwater in horizontally.
3. Try the foil test. This is a useful way to distinguish penetrating damp from condensation. Tape a sheet of aluminium foil tightly over the affected patch and leave it for 24 hours. If moisture forms on the front of the foil, it’s condensation; if it forms on the back, against the wall, it points to penetrating damp. A glass petri dish taped to the wall works in the same way.
