Description

Protectasilane 100 is 100% octyltriethoxysilane used as a water repellent impregnant for concrete protection.  It can deeply penetrate into the capillaries of concrete and render the substrate water repellent. This water repellent zone significantly reduces the absorption of water or efflorescence or other harmful salts such as chloride ions which are responsible for the bulk of the deterioration in reinforced concrete. The treatment will not significantly change the appearance of the concrete and the vapour permeability.  However, a slight darkening of the surface may occur for some substrates.

Recommended Uses

Protectasilane 100 is recommended as a water repellent sealer for reinforced concrete or other concrete masonry.

Key Features of PROTECTASILANE 100

  • 100% active with no hydrocarbon solvent used.
  • Ability to deeply penetrates into dense concrete.
  • Permanently bonds to the concretewith no peel or blister.
  • Forms UV, alkali stable and durable siloxane structure within concrete matrix.
  • Reduces water penetration, efflorescence and harmful salts such as chloride ions.
  • Does not significantly change the surface appearance and vapour permeability.

As concrete masonry varies significantly, a test MUST be carried out prior to application to find out the suitability of this product for the purpose.

Use Instructions

Application

  • Read the product information to ensure correct application and safe handling. Do not apply if rain or extreme weather is expected. Ensure the surface is dry, firm, and free from grime, oil, or previous coatings/sealers. Wash with a suitable detergent and water if necessary, then allow to dry. Fill all cracks with appropriate grouting materials and let them cure before application. Conduct a test before application to determine the required number of coats and the appropriate consumption rate.
  • Apply Protectasilane 100 by brush, roller, or spray. For best results, use saturation flooding with a hand‑pressure or airless spray equipment. Ensure sufficient material covers the surface. On vertical surfaces, apply as a thin liquid film stream running down approximately 30–40 cm. Apply a second coat immediately after the first is absorbed; this ‘wet‑in‑wet’ method saturates the surface to achieve deeper penetration.
  • Flood horizontal surfaces with the product for about 10 minutes to ensure penetration. If the substrate absorbs the sealer quickly after the first application, apply a second coat immediately. Remove any liquid remaining after 10 minutes to prevent excessive accumulation that could cause an uneven finish.
  • The number of applications depends on substrate permeability and the required penetration depth. Apply two coats to achieve satisfactory concrete protection. Apply additional ‘wet‑in‑wet’ coats when greater penetration depth is required.
  • Avoid splashing or spraying the product onto untreated areas. If splashing occurs, immediately remove it with a cloth dampened in a hydrocarbon solvent such as mineral turpentine.

Consumption rate

Protectasilane 100 consumption varies with concrete permeability and required penetration depth. Apply approximately 2–5 m² per litre per coat, though actual rates may differ. In order to ensure the high penetration depth, enough silane should be delivered on to the surface.  If the concrete is of high density, the application rate per coat should be reduced but more applications may be required in order to avoid excessive silane running off the surface.

After application

The initial water repellency will develop after the surface is dry.  Full curing may take 24 hours or up to 7 days.  Avoid heavy traffic or any staining for at least 24 hours.  The equipment can be washed in a hydrocarbon solvent such as mineral turpentine.

Pilot testing and quality control

Conduct a pilot test on a small area before application to determine the correct method, number of coats, and suitable consumption rate. Perform quality control after application to confirm the required penetration depth. Refer to the USE SPECIFICATION for further details if needed.

Typical Data

  • Appearance: Colourless liquid
  • Active ingredient: 100% octyltriethoxylsilane
  • Specific Gravity: 0.87 g/ml at 20 oC
  • pH value: Not allocated
  • Solubility in water: Insoluble in water
  • Flash point: >61oC

Important Note

Protectasilane 100 penetrates into the capillaries and renders the concrete surface water repellent while still leaving most of the capillaries open to allow water vapour to pass through. It reduces water absorption by capillary action.  However, it has a limited resistance to water penetration particularly under prolonged contact or hydrostatic pressure. On highly permeable concrete or in extreme wind‑driven rain, resistance to water penetration and harmful salts such as chloride ions may be inadequate.

Handling & Storage

Protectasilane 100 is hazardous and combustible. Refer to the safety data sheet for handling instructions and follow good industrial hygiene practices. Avoid vapour inhalation and skin or eye contact by wearing appropriate protective equipment. Use an air‑purifying respirator if high vapour concentrations are likely. Wash hands after handling. Store the product in closed containers in a cool, dry place away from fire or ignition sources. Shelf life is 12 months in the sealed original container when stored below 25 °C.

Use under sufficient ventilation away from any fire or ignition sources.

Keep out of reach of children.
