Description

Emulsion GPE50P is a silane/siloxane emulsion that acts as a water repellent penetrating sealer with strong surface beading. It delivers beading performance comparable to solvent based sealers and can be used as an admixture in latex paint/coatings to increase water resistance. It provides durable water repellency on masonry and adds stain resistance to treated surfaces.

Recommended Uses

Emulsion GPE50P can be used as a water repellent penetrating sealer after dilution. The sealer is suitable to treat permeable natural stone, concrete, brick, tile and render. GPE50P penetrates the capillaries of masonry substrate rendering the surface water repellent. It can also be used as a water repellent additive to latex paint/coating to increase the water resistance of coating film and improve the durability of coating against natural weathering.

Test & Performance

Surface Beading:

Emulsion GPE50P produces surface beading nearly equivalent to a solvent‑based silane/siloxane sealer on treated substrates. Figure 1 shows strong beading on sandstone treated with Emulsion GPE50P at a 1:9 dilution (left: treated; right: control):

left: treated and right control

Water Resistance:

Emulsion GPE50P provides significant resistance to water absorption in treated substrates. Figure 2 shows the capillary water absorption of four masonry materials treated at a 1:9 dilution. The results indicate that capillary water absorption in all treated substrates—including concrete, sandstone, granite, and bluestone—was significantly reduced:

Depth of Penetration:

Emulsion GPE50P penetrates into the capillaries of permeable substrates and forms a water‑repellent zone within the treated surface. Table 1 shows that a 1:9 dilution achieved good penetration depth in pressed concrete pavers, sandstone, and granite. In contrast, Emulsion GPE50P achieves only minimal penetration in bluestone. Therefore, a solvent‑based silane/siloxane sealer may provide better penetration when greater depth is required:

Penetration Depth
Pressed Concrete Paver >20 mm
Sandstone 3 mm
Granite 2-5 mm
Bluestone <1 mm

Admixture for paint/coating

Emulsion GPE50P works well as a water repellent additive for paint/coatings. Figure 3 shows that capillary water absorption of a cement mortar substrate coated with an acrylic primer containing 3% Emulsion GPE50P. The treated mortar absorbed significantly less water than the substrate coated with a standard primer:

Use Instructions

As a water repellent sealer

Emulsion GPE50P requires dilution with deionised water before use. A 1:9 ratio (5% active) provides the standard starting point. Users may adjust the ratio to suit specific applications. A preliminary test helps determine the most suitable dilution for the intended purpose.

Emulsion GPE50P applies easily by brush, roller, or sprayer. A low‑pressure hand‑pump sprayer provides the most consistent results. Two coats are typically required. Apply the second coat as soon as the first coat absorbs into the surface while it remains wet. This wet‑on‑wet method promotes deep penetration and prevents poor spreading that can occur if the first coat dries and develops instant surface beading.

As a water repellent additive

Emulsion GPE50P can be added at 1–3% to paint or coating formulations to produce a water‑repellent finish. The required addition rate varies with the intended application, so users should test to confirm performance. Additionally, users should test the compatibility between the coating system and GPE50P. You can incorporate during in‑plant mixing or after the paint is made. Because the emulsion may separate over time, stir before use.

Important Note

Perform a pilot test before use to confirm that the product suits the specific application.

Handling & Storage

Emulsion GPE50P is classified as a non‑hazardous material under Worksafe Australia criteria. However, users should still follow standard industrial hygiene practices when handling the product. Store it in closed containers in a cool, dry location away from ignition sources. The product has a shelf life of 6 months when stored in a sealed container at temperatures below 25°C.

Packaging

Available in 20 and 200 litre plastic drums or a 1,000 litre plastic IBCs. Other size containers are available on request.
